Using an External Editor

To start an external editor, enter the command 'sysed'. This is useful, for example, if you prefer your familiar editor to make extensive editing work.

For this purpose, an external editor must be specified first in the user-specific SET parameters of the end user tools, which is started by the command 'sysed' (e.g., the Windows editor "notepad.exe"). This editor may be any Windows editor provided the starting syntax of the external editor corresponds to that of the Windows editor "notepad.exe". If you intend to use an MS-DOS editor, please bear in mind that the character set used in MS-DOS is not the same as in Windows. Therefore, special characters, such as, e.g., umlauts, are not represented correctly.

The command 'sysed' entered in the command line of the built-in editor will take you to the external editor, taking along the contents in the editor form. When exiting from the external editor, you will be taken back to the built-in editor with the contents saved.

For transportation of the editor contents, a file is created which is being read on return to the built-in editor and then deleted.

The name used for this file is ed.'pid', where 'pid' stands for the string obtained from the process ID.
