User Setup (Option /N)

This installation step is required for configuration of a client PC in such a way that the previously installed network version of the ADABAS tools can be used. Every user who wants to work with the ADABAS tools within the network must perform this part of network installation.

In this case, installation is not done from the installation disks but out of the setup directory that was created by the administrator setup in the ADABAS directory on the network server.

The user setup performs the following steps:

- Creating or updating the ADABAS initialization files in the user's local or private WINDOWS directory

- Configuring the private Windows environment for the work with ADABAS

- Creating the "adabas d" program group and the program icons in Windows

- Copying the required files to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, if Windows is used locally

Before the user setup can be performed, the following preconditions must be met:

- the network must be operative

- You must be logged onto the network

- The ADABAS tools must have been installed in a directory on the network server by using the administrator setup

- You must have reading access to this directory and its subdirectories

Configuration of your client PC for the work with the ADABAS tools requires the following steps:

1. Start Microsoft Windows by entering WIN at the MS-DOS prompt.

2. Choose Run from the File menu of the Windows Program Manager.

3. Enter the following command in the command line then displayed:

<DBROOT>\SETUP\<subdirectory>\setup /N

For <DBROOT>, enter the disk drive and directory name of the ADABAS directory on the fileserver, and for <subdirectory>, one of the following names, according to the ADABAS product:

If you want to perform the user setup for OfficePlus, for example, the call runs as follows:

X:\ADABAS_D\SETUP\OFFICEPL\setup /n

(where in this example, X:\ADABAS_D is the network drive and directory in which the ADABAS tools have been installed).

The ADABAS setup starts with the message "initializing adabas d setup". After a certain time, a welcome window appears. Choose Continue to go on with the installation.

4. If you are installing ADABAS OfficePlus and want to use the AccessPlus applications, now enter the directory in which Microsoft Access has been installed. Otherwise, ignore the input field and acknowledge. In this case, the AccessPlus program files will indeed be installed but no icons for AccessPlus will be created in the Program Manager. For subsequent creation of these icons, consult the chapter "accessplus" in the OfficePlus manual.

5. The setup program then asks which TCP/IP product will be used for communication (Windows Sockets or special Novell LAN WorkPlace DLL, see Section System Requirements on the Client PC ). Choose the product that has been successfully installed on your workstation. If you are not sure which product is available on your computer, ask your system administrator.

6. If you use Windows locally on your computer, some files that are required for the work with the ADABAS tools may then be copied to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

In addition, some initialization files are updated or created in your local or private WINDOWS directory. If the "adabas d" program group of the Windows Program Manager must be created newly, the program icons for the installed applications are created.

7. If you configure your client PC for the program package "adabas windows clients", you may skip the following steps and go to section 4.2.3 "comparing and updating autoexec.bat" immediately.

After copying the ADABAS files and creating the "adabas d" program group, a window appears informing you that the ODBC administrator must be started to enable you to install the ADABAS ODBC driver successfully in your Windows environment.

The ADABAS tools or other Windows applications can only access ADABAS data after an ODBC data source has been installed for each ADABAS database (SERVERDB) by using the Microsoft ODBC administrator.

Choose Continue to start the ODBC administrator.

Note: You can also choose Exit to skip this installation step and perform it at a later point in time. This step must be performed in any case, otherwise, you will not be able to work with the ADABAS tools. To start the ODBC administrator, double-click on the "odbc administrator" program icon in the ADABAS program group. Then proceed as described in the following item (8). Only after creating one (or more) ODBC data source(s) for your SERVERDB(s) in this way, you will be able to access ADABAS data using the ADABAS tools or other Windows applications.

If you selected Continue, the "data sources" window of the Microsoft ODBC administrator appears.

8. You create a new ODBC data source for ADABAS by clicking on the button Add. A window with a list of the installed ODBC drivers appears.

Select the "adabas d" entry from the "installed odbc drivers" list. Click on OK. The "adabas odbc setup" window appears.

In this window, the following parameters must be filled in:

Data Source Name : A unique name for the data source. This can be the name of the ADABAS database (SERVERDB) or a synonym for it, e.g., "customerdb".
Description : A comment to describe the database may be entered, e.g., "berlin customer database". You are free to fill in this field or not.
Serverdb : Enter the database name (SERVERDB), e.g., "db611".
Servernode : Enter the node name of the database server (SERVERNODE), e.g., "dbserver1".

All parameters required must be filled in before you can click the OK button to save the settings.

The newly installed ADABAS data source then appears in the "data sources (driver)" list of the ODBC administrator. The name of the ODBC driver, "adabas d", is indicated after the name of the data source, enclosed in parentheses.

Repeat step 8 to create more data sources for ADABAS databases (SERVERDBs).

After successful installation of data sources for all SERVERDBs, select Close to leave the ODBC administrator.

Notes: The ODBC administrator can be called up any time subsequent to the ADABAS installation in order to change the settings or to configure entries for additional SERVERDBs. Double-click on the "odbc administrator" program icon in the ADABAS program group to start the ODBC administrator.

To change settings, select the corresponding ADABAS data source (DataSource) and click on Setup...

To configure a new ADABAS data source, e.g., for another SERVERDB, proceed as described in item 8. To delete a data source no longer needed, select it in the list of data sources and click on Delete.
