ADABAS client-server installations can be embedded in a Novell network without any problems in the following configuration:

In this case, ADABAS is not installed as a Netware Loadable Module (NLM) on the existing Netware Fileserver but instead as a dedicated database server within the network. This configuration offers the advantage that the resources of the database server are available exclusively for pure database operation and that the performance of the server depends only on the database load.
The database server can, for instance, be a PC which has Windows NT, OS/2 or UNIX installed.
The clients and the database server communicate using TCP/IP, the clients and the NetWare Fileserver use SPX/IPX. Parallel operation of both protocols is no problem. Example configurations on the client PCs are Windows (or Windows for Workgroups) with Novell LAN WorkPlace Version 4.1 and up, or Windows for Workgroups with "tcp/ip for windows for workgroups".
There are two possibilities for installation of the ADABAS client software in such a network environment:
- Installation of ADABAS software on one or several clients (see Section Installation on a Client)
or:
- Installation of ADABAS software in a SHARED DIRECTORY on the NetWare Fileserver (administrator setup)
- Configuration of one or several clients (user setup)
The particular points to be observed for the last alternative are described in the following section.
